"I am a social worker and ordered your course because I am evaluating parenting programs. I love it! You have a relaxed writing style that gets the points across without beating parents up. I will definitely pass this along to my colleagues. Thank you for the work you are doing on behalf of stronger families."

You asked about the book

OK, everyone!  You've been asking about my parenting book that was just released in December, 2008; and you've dragged me onto Facebook; and now you want a blog to start discussions about the parenting skills I talk about in the book.  Thank you very much for all your encouragement about getting involved in social networking.  All of the new skills you are teaching me to use are exciting and wonderful ways to learn from each other.  My book evolved over a 20+ year period of teaching parenting classes, co-founding the National Parenting Institute in 1989 (a non-profit providing classroom parenting skills education), working hard to get our courses approved for use by those parents who needed a certificate for a variety of reasons (divorce, adoption. incarceration, abuse or suspected abuse, etc.), and then going on to develop an independent study, court-approved parenting course.  That's how Accent On Parenting; Tools for Building 21st Century Kids (2nd edition abridged) was born.  It's a 2nd edition abridged because the actual course is the unabridged version.  It's a 2nd abridged because so many of you who have been in our parenting courses wanted a book to share with your friends and family.  So, It has arrived and here's a snapshot of the cover.

Thank you!

I look forward to our blog discussions regarding the philosophy of parenting contained in my book.  We'll be traveling through such broad general topics as child growth and development, communication skills, decisionmaking skills, building self-esteem, and developing a discipline plan.  The goal is to be better at being a parent, grandparent, teacher, child care provider.  These are our collective kids and we are their collective guides on a grand journey through life.  Let's join together "living, learning, loving what we do.
